As we celebrate Merdeka on 31 August and Malaysia Day this coming16 September, I am brought to reflect on the historical conditions that led to the polities now comprising our beloved Malaysia falling under the yoke of colonialism in the first place. The reasons for their downfall were undoubtedly multifaceted.

It is troubling that the main purpose of housing as shelter has been undermined in favour of a far more problematic conceptualization of housing as a commodity, both in the policy discourse on housing as well as our wider, more general conversations on the matter.

This discussion paper is part of KRI’s research series on Gender and Care Work. It examines women’s economic empowerment in Malaysia through two key objectives: first, exploring the circumstances of women outside the labour force, particularly housewives; and second, reviewing current policies and narratives on women’s economic empowerment to identify priority areas and policy gaps.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have risen over the last two centuries, with current and accumulated emissions per capita from rich nations greatly exceeding those of the Global South.

The KRI views traces the evolution of humanity’s understanding, beginning with early narrations such as Indra’s Net and progressing through Newton’s laws and Einstein’s theory of general relativity. It highlights how each model reflects not only scientific observation but also the imaginative thinking to make sense of these observations.
