ABOUT US
Shedding Light on Malaysia’s Critical Issues for the Rakyat
Khazanah Research Institute (KRI) is a research institute dedicated to advancing evidence-based policy for a better Malaysia. Our core mission is to shed light on the nation’s most pressing economic, social, and structural issues that affect the daily lives of the rakyat. By transforming rigorous research into policy recommendations and actionable insights, we aim to inform policies that strengthen Malaysian families, uplift communities, and drive inclusive national progress.

A Legacy, Woven Anew
Khazanah Research Institute (KRI) was formed in 2014 as a company limited by guarantee with Khazanah Nasional Berhad (“Khazanah”) as its sole member. It is funded by Yayasan Hasanah and Khazanah Nasional Berhad. KRI is however independently governed by its own Board of Trustees as indeed KRI is intended to provide independent views in enriching the public policy research and advocacy space in Malaysia.
Public policy research is inevitably about furthering the common good amidst resource constraints and the contests for those resources. It, therefore, applies the lens of the rakyat especially those whose voices are less heard. It is also about influence at both ends of policy; policy makers and the political market on one end and the target audience who is part of society at large on the other end. The game of influence is therefore about communication in its various forms as well as the agents intermediating the various parties.
We chose the weave motif for our logo to reflect this intertwining of many distinct strands of thoughts and stakeholders. Weaving is a craft Malaysia has long understood, from the gold-threaded songket to the purposeful Penan mat. Each strand is distinct, each crossing intentional, and the fabric that emerges is greater than the sum of its parts. So too is our work: a deliberate intertwining of disciplines, perspectives, and truths that together form a fuller picture of the nation’s realities.
KRI also aspires to be a focal point for those interested in policy research and advocacy, be they our own researchers, their counterparts and the various counterparts we interact with. This social capital formation completes the triangulation of knowledge capital, social capital and influence. We will make all our data and findings publicly available.
Our Vision
Our Mission
To that end, we will
- be ethical and rigorous in the conduct of our research
- be independent in our inquiry and policy recommendations
- collaborate with all like-minded individuals and institutions
- be grounded by the state of human condition
- be the voice for those whose voices are not heard.

True policy research requires courage
Policy research is impactful when it goes beyond analysis to include communication, advocacy, and alliance-building. But this doesn’t mean the research is any less rigorous; it must always be grounded in sound empirical analysis and strong theoretical foundations. That is KRI’s mission: weaving knowledge enterprise with social capital formation.
