Malaysia's rapid urbanization presents complex challenges in creating liveable cities while addressing infrastructure gaps. Our research analyzes housing affordability crises in major urban centres like Kuala Lumpur and Penang, public transportation integration across the Klang Valley and emerging cities, smart city initiatives and their implementation challenges, and urban governance models that balance federal, state, and local authority interests.
As Malaysia develops its urban centres while managing sprawl and congestion, we examine strategies for affordable housing provision including rent-to-own schemes, infrastructure financing mechanisms including public-private partnerships, urban-rural connectivity to reduce migration pressures, climate-resilient urban planning for flood-prone areas, and models for inclusive city development that serve diverse communities including urban poor, migrant workers, and persons with disabilities.
