Gig Workers vs The Algorithm

More than half of Malaysia’s gig workers earn below RM1,500.

Malaysia’s sharing economy is becoming an increasingly important source of employment. As more people turn to platform-based work, long-standing challenges such as social protection and income security remain. At the same time, new questions are emerging as AI becomes more deeply integrated into the way work is organised.

In her recent views piece, “AI and the Future of Work: Worker Rights in the Sharing Economy”, our Researcher, Dr. Rachel Gong, highlights how many workers in Malaysia’s sharing economy continue to face gaps in protection. Over half of freelancers earn below RM1,500, while many lack access to protections such as EPF and SOCSO.

She also explains how AI-driven algorithms are reshaping the workplace by assigning tasks and monitoring performance. As these systems take on a greater role in managing workers, they raise important questions about accountability, labour protections and the future of work.
