Professor Emeritus Dr. Tham Siew Yean

Dr. Tham is an economist and Emeritus Professor at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). She is also Visiting Senior Fellow at Regional Economic Studies (RES), ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute, Singapore (2025-2027). She was a former board member of Global Development Network (GDN) and current board member of Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS), Malaysia.

Her research interests cover foreign direct investments (FDI), including Chinese direct investments in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, trade in goods and services, free trade agreements and digital trade. Industrial policies used to develop specific sectors in Malaysia and ASEAN are her second research focus. She does occasional consulting in her areas of interest for national and international agencies. For the former, she has been involved in policy-making for some national plans. She also sits on the editorial board of several local and international journals. Since journal articles have restricted access, she also writes public commentaries on her key research interests.
