Tracing The Roots of Iran-West conflict
To understand today's conflict between Iran and the West, we must look beyond the present.
The ongoing disruption in the Strait of Hormuz has highlighted how geopolitical conflicts can have far-reaching global consequences. While many focus on recent developments, understanding the crisis requires looking at the deeper historical relationship between Iran and the West.
In his latest paper "The Intimate Enmity: Iran and the West", our Associate Director of Research, Yin Shao Loong, argues that the US-Israeli war on Iran and Iran's subsequent retaliation are only the latest chapter in a much longer history of imperial intervention and regional power struggles.
The roots of this relationship stretch back over 2,500 years to the Persian-Greek conflicts, and were later shaped by foreign intervention in Iran's oil industry and the 1953 coup against Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh. These historical turning points continue to influence the tensions we see today.
