Who Will Care For Malaysia's Elderly?

Malaysia is ageing faster than we’re prepared for.

As more Malaysians grow older, the need for long-term care will continue to increase. Yet, much of the financial responsibility for care still falls on families. While this cost may not always be visible, it can affect household finances and economic productivity.

Our researcher, Ilyana Mukhriz, recently joined the guest panel at Policy Roadmap: Crafting the National Policy Roadmap for Healthy Ageing, where she discussed what Malaysia needs to do to build a more sustainable care system.

This means reforming aged-care services, improving access to care facilities and making care more affordable for families. It also means recognising that ageing in place cannot be the only solution. As older people’s needs change, some will eventually require more intensive care. Malaysia needs to start preparing for these needs now, ensuring that care is not only available but accessible and sustainable as the country continues to age.
