The Challenge Behind Economic Reform

Why are reforms so difficult?

Knowing what needs to change is only part of the challenge. Many reforms take time to deliver results, while the costs are often felt much sooner by households and businesses. This makes reform difficult, even when the right solutions are already known.

Our Chairman, Dr Nungsari, highlights that reforms are shaped by the political market, where policies such as subsidies influence how households spend and how businesses make decisions. Over time, people and businesses adapt to these policies, making change harder. Reforming them means adjusting behaviours, changing business decisions and accepting some short-term costs.

Reforms involve trade-offs. We cannot have all the benefits without bearing some of the costs.
