Navigating the Perils of Urbanization: Gentrification and Displacement

"Urban growth must create opportunities without leaving communities behind."
On 22 May 2026, KRI, in collaboration with the Kulliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design (KAED), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), hosted a public lecture on Navigating the Perils of Urbanization: Gentrification and Displacement, featuring Professor Hyun Bang Shin of the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).
The session brought together academics, researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and students to examine the social consequences of rapid urban development, particularly the challenges of gentrification and community displacement. Drawing on both global and local experiences, the discussion explored how urban transformation can reshape neighbourhoods, affect housing affordability, and impact the livelihoods and identities of long-standing communities.
Through the public lecture and subsequent fireside conversation, participants reflected on the role of policy, planning, and governance in ensuring that urban growth remains equitable and inclusive. The session underscored the importance of balancing economic development with social justice, while fostering cities that are resilient, liveable, and responsive to the needs of all residents.
KRI extends its appreciation to Professor Hyun Bang Shin, KAED IIUM, and all participants for their valuable contributions to this timely and important discussion.
