Malaysia's Riders Battling Extreme Heat

When the heat peaks, so does the pressure on Malaysia's delivery riders. For delivery riders, lunchtime is often the busiest part of the day. They spend hours on the road, travelling between restaurants and customers under the midday sun. While many people avoid the heat by staying indoors, riders continue working through these conditions. Our researcher, Wan Amirah Wan Usamah, highlights that Malaysia’s high temperatures and humidity can increase the risk of heat exhaustion, heat cramps and heat stroke. She explains that prolonged heat exposure can worsen existing health conditions such as ischaemic heart disease, respiratory illnesses and diabetes. For delivery riders who spend hours outdoors, these risks are part of the growing challenge of working in a warmer climate. As the heat intensifies, the risks faced by delivery riders working outdoors cannot be overlooked.
