In a world where global crises reshape economies faster than policies can adapt, the question is no longer if ASEAN must transform, but how quickly its future leaders can lead that change.

Held from 23–27 November, co-hosted by Khazanah Research Institute (KRI) and the Development Leadership Dialogue (DLD) of SOAS University of London, the 11th Future Leaders Programme (FLP) opened with the honour of Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah gracing the first day. The programme’s commencement was further elevated by an incisive opening dialogue featuring Professor Joseph Stiglitz, Nobel Laureate in Economics, alongside Ha-Joon Chang. Their exchange set the tone for a week centred on the theme New Development Strategies for ASEAN in a “New” World, bringing together emerging leaders for lectures, debates, and deep discussions guided by Ha-Joon Chang and Christopher Cramer.

As global power balances shift and ecological crises accelerate, the Future Leaders Programme provides an essential platform for cross-sector learning between government, the private sector, civil society, international organisations, and academia. In navigating these complexities, the programme fostered meaningful conversations on how ASEAN’s future leaders can recalibrate long-term strategies and build resilience, inclusivity, and prosperity for the region.
