Roundtable Discussion: Best Practices for Regulatory Approaches to AI-Deepfakes Used in Financial Scams
On 20 November 2025, Khazanah Research Institute (KRI), in collaboration with Columbia University, held a Roundtable Discussion titled “Best Practices for Regulatory Approaches to AI-Deepfakes Used in Financial Scams”.
This session brought together local and international policymakers, lawmakers, enforcers, researchers, and industry stakeholders to exchange insights on the growing misuse of AI-deepfakes in financial scams. As AI-deepfake images, videos, and voice impersonations increasingly become tools of deception in online financial frauds, participants underscored the urgent need for coherent and forward-looking regulatory frameworks, particularly within the Malaysian context.
The discussion fostered dialogue among regulators, academia, and civil society on building a multi-layered governance structure, while learning from comparative jurisdictions presented by international speakers from the US, Australia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Indonesia.
