Can sovereign wealth funds drive the next wave of green industrial transformation?

Our researcher, Azfar Hanif Azizi, had the opportunity to serve as a panel member at the Katadata Sustainability Action for the Future Economy (SAFE) 2026. The event was held on 17 September 2026 at Sudirman Hall, Sequis Tower, SCBD, Jakarta. Some of the discussion explored how sovereign wealth funds and strategic public capital can support green transformation and long-term industrial development.

Drawing from Malaysia’s experience, Azfar highlighted the nationalisation of Guthrie through Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) and Khazanah’s role in supporting the development of Malaysia’s automotive and semiconductor industries. The session also explored how public investment can support industrial upgrading while maintaining financial sustainability and institutional accountability.
