As artificial intelligence continues to reshape economies and labour markets worldwide, understanding its implications for Malaysia's workforce is becoming increasingly important.

On 30 July 2026, KRI researchers, Dr Rachel Gong, Dr Jun-E Tan, and Dr Mikhail Rosli met with the ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO) to exchange views on AI adoption and its impact on the labour market. The discussion covered a range of issues, including recent labour market developments, productivity and wage growth, skills mismatches, workforce readiness, demographic changes, and the opportunities and challenges presented by AI adoption across industries. It also explored the implications of labour and foreign workforce policies, data gaps in measuring AI's impact, and the future workforce requirements of strategic initiatives such as the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone.

The engagement provided an opportunity to discuss policy considerations for fostering inclusive AI adoption, strengthening workforce resilience, and ensuring Malaysia is well-positioned to navigate technological transformation while supporting long-term productivity and sustainable economic growth.
